If you enjoy musical theatre, this movie is a must-see! Adapted for the screen, The Last Five Years tells the story of a musical written by Jason Robert Brown. Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan are a powerful duo as they play Cathy and Jamie, a couple who tell their story starting at opposite points of their relationship and meeting in the middle.

This movie will have you laughing one minute, and crying the next. Unlike some romantic comedies, this film also highlights the love of family in addition to romance. It follows the journeys of a divorced father, his love-skeptic daughter, and her inexperienced younger brother. The three of them deal with love in different ways and many lessons are learned along the way.

4. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, this movie is a classic. Loosely based off of the Shakespeare play, The Taming of the Shrew, Kat and her sister Bianca venture into the world of high school boys, regardless of their father’s objections. If you were able to see Charter Arts’ production of Taming of the Shrew last year, you should definitely check out this movie! Either way it is a great watch, especially on Valentine’s Day.

5. 500 Days of Summer (2009)

Though one of the first lines of the movie is “This is not a love story” 500 Days of Summer is a great romantic comedy. The film moves through the 500 days that Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) spends fixated on Summer (Zooey Deschanel). Their relationship is not ideal, as he falls fast and she does not believe in love. This movie is quirky, raw, and entertaining, all at the same time. If you’re not looking for a typical romantic comedy, this is your go-to movie!

We hope you have a Happy Valentine’s Day and maybe even get to watch one of these movies. Thank you for reading today’s article on The Performer. Check back tomorrow for a new World News Wednesday post!
